Vanitas and the Consciousness of Mortality in Western Art and Art History

Vanitas is an art historical theme broadly understood as a symbolic reminder of mortality – the limits and transience of life. It is an idea which has unified Western culture throughout the ages and played a major role in the development of European art. Join us for a discussion of its origins and how its representation has evolved over time from ancient Rome to modern day.
