Guinea Bissau

Presenter: Helen Whitson

Guinea Bissau sits at 177th of 189 countries on the UN Human Development Index so it doesn't draw a lot of visitors, partially due to lack of infrastructure but also due to political instability. There are five national parks, two of which are in the popular Bijago Islands where most tourists visit. This presentation will focus more on the southern regions of the country which are more remote and rarely visited by tourists.

Helen Whitson first went to Guinea Bissau in 2000 - 2002 as a volunteer teacher with Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO). She worked in a rural education project as a teacher trainer of teachers in community schools. Since then, she has returned regularly and is now working with a local NGO that works to serve the education needs of the population in the sector of Cacine.
