Great Directors: Academy Award Winners, Foreign Language Film

The group will view and critique six films--directed by a range of directors over several decades—that have won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film.  Instituted as a regular award in 1956, this prize is not awarded to an individual, but to the submitting country as a whole. The following films will be viewed and discussed: Gabriel Axel’s Babette’s Feast (1986); Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso (1988); Marleen Gorris’s Antonia’s Line (1995); Denys Arcand’s The Barbarian Invasions (2003); Susanne Bier’s In a Better World (2010), and Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman (2016). The objective is for members to increase their understanding and appreciation of the collaborative art of filmmaking in general, and in particular, to expand their knowledge and appreciation of international filmmakers, past and present. Individual members of the group may assume responsibility for leading the discussion of each film, and members will share their responses and insights into various aspects of the films, such as screenplay, direction, acting, production design, cinematography, themes and symbols, editing, and sound.
