Material Sustainability in a Circular Economy
In 2003 , corrosion was estimated to cost the Canadian economy $46 billion dollars a year! This cost encompasses the degradation of manufactured items and the measures taken (e.g painting and coating) to prevent that deterioration from occurring. This impact is real; cars rust, pipelines leak into the environment, bridges fall down, trains derail. The presentation will show what effect corrosion has on our lives - degradation of our infrastructure, environmental damage, cost of repair and replacement, endangerment due to equipment failure, etc. A significant proportion of these costs can be avoided by better design and engineering. An international organization - NACE - has led the struggle to minimize the impact of corrosion on society. Measures have been developed to extend service life and better care for our goods and structures.
