Middlemarch by George Eliot
Probably the best-known of Eliot’s novels, Middlemarch shows, through the lives of its characters, a society undergoing great change in the period 1829-32. This was a time of rapid industrialization and societal restructuring not always welcomed by the town’s inhabitants. Amongst other issues, Eliot examines the role of women, the nature of marriage, and the impact of political reform.
