ABORTION AND THE LAW Comparing Canada and the United States |
Canada has no law restricting abortion. Abortion in Canada is legal at all stages of pregnancy, regardless of the reason, and is publicly funded as a medical procedure under the Canada Health Act and provincial health care systems. Having said that, access to abortion varies by region and non-legal barriers continue to exist. Nonetheless Canada remains the only western, industrialized nation with no legal restrictions on abortion. How did this come about? How does this compare to the contentious situation which has arisen in the USA where it appears that the US Supreme Court is poised to overturn the famous American case of Roe v. Wade?
