Are you interested in listening to live jazz music on Saturday afternoon? Perhaps you have an interest in jazz music, but never had a mentor to help you understand the genre? If you answered, ‘Yes’ to either of these questions, this may be a CALL group for you. Jazz Nebula is pleased to welcome all CALL members to their high energy concerts. Before and during the concert, Musical Director John Reid will briefly explain the significance of the featured musicians/composers and their contributions to the world of jazz. John Reid is a member of the Music Department at the University of Calgary offering courses on the history of Jazz, Blues and Funk. Following the concert, John Reid will lead a discussion and a Q&A. These concerts truly combine a love of music with our lifelong passion for learning! If members are interested in a more in-depth lecture on jazz music, John Reid has also offered to provide a lecture in the New Year. CALL members are able to buy individual concert tickets ($35.00) or a discounted six performance subscription ($175.00). General admission is $40 per ticket; however, Nebula Jazz is providing CALL members with a $5.00/ticket discount. To kick off the music season, John Reid has provided leadership in organizing a fantastic tribute to the legendary Ray Charles. While there is no discount for CALL members, ticket information is being provided, as Ray Charles is a legendary jazz performer. Hearing ten accomplished jazz musicians play together is a unique Calgary experience! You do not need to register for this Jazz interest group, as ticket purchase is up to the individual. You simply have to show up for the fun.

The Ray Charles Tribute Orchestra
This concert pays homage to one of the greatest musicians of all time. A ten-piece ensemble of Calgary’s finest musicians recreate the one-of-a-kind sound of Ray Charles and they will perform such hits as Georgia on My Mind, What’d I Say, Hit the Road Jack, and Let the Good Times Roll among them. The group was formed by Musical Director John Gray, bassist and leader on the Calgary Jazz scene, who toured with the Ray Charles Orchestra. The orchestra features Grammy Award-winning vocalist Donald Ray Johnson on lead vocals, and includes a solid rhythm section, a killer horn section, and three soulful backup singers, The Donald Raylettes. |

Cole Porter Tribute at Scarboro United Church. Noted for witty, urbane lyrics on Broadway and in film. His most successful musical, Kiss Me Kate won the first Tony Award for Best Musical. JAZZ NEBULA’s Quartet featuring Kim Szabo, piano and vocals; John Reid, saxophone, flute, and clarinet; plus bass and drums.

Thelonious Monk Tribute at Scarboro United Church. American jazz pianist and composer who is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. JAZZ NEBULA’s Quartet featuring Jon Day, piano and vocals; John Reid, saxophone, flute, and clarinet; plus bass and drums.
