How Can You Think That?
A Political Book Club
Are you frustrated by the current level of political discussion and the polarization of opinions? There must be a better way to discuss politics than what we see on the Internet and television or hear in shouting matches between people who disagree with each other.
Our political book club members are interested in bridging political divides and having intelligent, civilized conversations about why conservatives and liberals often find it hard to meet on common ground.
We are a diverse group of people from a variety of backgrounds and ways of thinking.
Every month, we feature a new book as our basis for discussion.

If you enjoy word games, you might be interested in learning to play Royalty. Each Thursday afternoon, the Word Freaks gather to battle wits over creating words with the letters they are dealt. Not easy to make a word if you have a fistful of vowels or indeed if you have no vowels! There are some rules to learn but you will have very willing helpers as guides. We have lots of laughs and some serious debates about whether a word is legitimate.

Short Reads: Great Women Writers
This CALL group is based on the idea that it is essential to hear both women’s and men’s voices. Historically, women’s voices were not valued. As Elizabeth Lesser puts it in her book Cassandra Speaks, when women’s voices are heard, the full scope of human experience is shown.
Our life stories may not have changed the course of history, but our stories shape us. We want to invite you to be part of a group interested in writing stories based on our life experiences. We will share and discuss approaches to writing our memories. What gives our stories life will be explored together. As a group we will use prompts, old pictures and special mementos to start our writing process. Some of our writing can be done in the meeting and more can be done at home between meetings. We will be sharing our writing by providing an audience for each other. We hope, through practice and encouragement, to improve our written stories.

Discussion centers on both the literary aspects of film such as character, story, symbolism and theme as well as the cinematic elements of music, costume, lighting and camera work. The goal of the group discussion is to bring out subtleties individual members might have missed.

In this course we will experience the health benefits of the meditative practices of, “paying attention on purpose, in the moment, without judgement”, as well as the benefits to health and well being of paying attention to the transitory nature of experience. Infectious Disease Pandemics: Historical Lessons and Future Concerns
Infectious disease pandemics have shaped, and been shaped by, human history. Frightening diseases such as plague and smallpox spread widely as a result of both natural causes and human activities. Societal reactions included fear, discrimination and segregation, as well as efforts to prevent spread and ease suffering. As humans gained knowledge of the disease agents, they used them as tools for medical research, but also as weapons of war. The development of vaccines and antibiotics helped us to control and prevent outbreaks, at least in developed nations. However, the success of these medical interventions has also fostered complacency that may hinder efforts to prevent future pandemics.
Speaker: Dr. Tracy O'Connor, Professor Emerita, MRU
