GREAT DIRECTORS: CONTEMPORARY WOMEN
The group will view and critique six films directed by women from different generations and several countries. The films include Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women (2016); Jane Campion’s The Piano 1993); Susanne Bier’s After the Wedding (2006); Gillian Armstrong’s My Brilliant Career (1979); Claire Denis’ White Material (2009), and Sarah Polley’s Away From Her (2006). The objective is for members to increase their understanding and appreciation of the collaborative art of filmmaking and to expand their knowledge of the work of these acclaimed women directors. Members will share their responses and insights into various aspects of the films, such as screenplay, direction, action, setting, performances, cinematography, themes and symbols, editing, and sound. The facilitators will provide a framework for appreciating each film and Individual members of the group may assume responsibility for leading the discussions.
